The tradition of offering Masses for others, particularly the deceased, originated in the very early church. The priest has three purposes when offering Holy Mass:
1. to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the church.
2. to offer Mass in union with the whole church for the good of the whole church.
3. for the particular intentions requested.
An individual or group may ask the priest to offer a Mass for several different intentions: healing, thanksgiving, birthdays, and anniversary. Masses are also offered for the repose of the souls of those who have died (sometimes a Mass is said on the deceased person’s birthday or anniversary of death). The request is made to the parish office in person or written notice. The Diocese of Biloxi suggests that a donation be given to the priest offering the Mass for your intention. The suggested amount is $10 but may be any amount. Often the Mass is offered in lieu of flowers for the funeral and acknowledgement cards are available to be sent to the family of the deceased to recognize the Mass being said for that person.
The Diocese also suggests that there be only one named intention (e.g. Mary Doe, Deceased; or John and Mary Doe, Deceased; or Mary Doe, birthday, or John and Mary Doe, anniversary). Masses may also be offered for other special needs, such as Peace in our World, victims of disasters, military, first responders, teachers, etc.
The 9am Mass on Sundays is designated for all of the intentions of the members of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish Faith Community. Multiple intentions are permitted at the 8:30am Mass on Thursdays and the 4pm Mass on Saturdays.
