First Eucharist
Once a child has been prepared for Sacrament of First Reconciliation, they can prepare to receive First Eucharist.
Guidelines for First Eucharist
The Church recognizes parents as the most influential agents of catechesis for their children; the first educators, or catechists.
The basic responsibility for sacramental preparation rests with the parent. The role of the Parish is as an aide to parents.
Children will prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation/ Penance ‘prior’ to their first reception of the Eucharist.
For children seeking sacraments, a copy of the child’s baptismal is required. (If you experience any problems, please contact the Parish office).
A child ‘must’ have participated in Religious Education sessions or have been enrolled in Catholic School the year prior to sacramental year.
For children not baptized as infants who have attained the age of reason (defined as age 7), the Order of Christian Initiation (OCIA) adapted for children is the process for them. Please contact the Parish office
Before Receiving the Sacrament, the child will …
know who Jesus is, some main events in His life and the story of His death and resurrection.
participate actively and consciously in the Mass.
distinguish between ordinary bread and Eucharistic bread (Christ’s real presence).
have a desire to receive First Eucharist.
