TheearlyChurchadoptedapracticecalled“divinereading”or, in Latin, lectio divina. It is a simple way of prayerfully reading theBible and has five movements: Prepare, Read, Reflect, Respond, andRest. Prepare: Take a moment to put yourself in the presence of God before reading the scriptures. Ask the Holy Spirit to come more deeply into your heart and to open your eyes in a new way to hisWord. Read: Slowly read through the passage. At some point, a word, phrase, orsentence willjumpoutatyou. Reflect: Read it again, allowing yourself to be drawn into thosewords. Don’t overthink or go into “study mode.” Focus on the part that drewyour attentioninthe first reading. Respond: Read it a third time, and apply it to your life.
